Painting Mediums & Varnishes

Art Spectrum Linseed Oil is used to enhance flow of oil colours and slow drying time. Ideal for wet-on-wet techniques, Art Spectrum Linseed Oil  can also be used to clean brushes.

Jo Sonja's Retarder Mediums are used to slow-down the drying time of acrylic paints. Jo Sonja's Gel Retarder greatly extends drying time and can be mixed with Jo Sonja's Retarder Medium to decrease the "open time," as needed.

Matisse Gel Mediums are able to produce a wide range of effects when intermixed with other mediums and acrylic colours. Specifically formulated to be thick & buttery, whilst remaining full transparent, Matisse Gel Mediums are high versatile - able to act as a clear transparent colour extender and also as an impasto for 3D extrapolations & multi-layer work.

Derivan Impasto Medium is a full-bodied texture paste and modelling compound that dries to a water-resistant, low subdued sheen which is similar to the sheen on a dried paint film of Matisse Acrylic Paint.  Although Derivan Impasto Medium is not fully transparent when dry, it will not alter the richness of colours substantially.

Matisse Impasto is a full-bodied texture paste and modelling compound, free of colour pigmentation. Although Matisse Impasto is not fully transparent when dry, there is very little visual colour-loss when mixing and the richness will not be altered in any substantial way.

Drying to a low, subdued sheen and with a very open matrix, Matisse Impasto has the major benefit of allowing all the water to evaporate while losing less volume on drying.

Matisse Polyurethane Water-Based Gloss Varnishes is a very popular varnish used in folk art techniques, providing a clear, high gloss non-yellowing finish.

Matisse Polyurethane Water-Based Varnishes provide a clear, non-yellowing and hard-wearing finish for all hard surfaces painted with acrylic colours. Quick-drying and flexible, Matisse Polyurethane Water-Based Varnishes are water & heat resistant, making them a very popular varnish used in folk art techniques.

Atelier Interactive Slow Medium extends wet-in-wet blending time, increases translucency and improves acrylic flow. Ideal for glazing and other techniques which require thinner paint and longer working time. Atelier Interactive Slow Medium Thick is excellent for outdoor sketching but is not as popular for indoor painting.

Art Spectrum Oil Painting Medium #3 is used as the fattest medium in the sequence of painting by the"fat over lean" rule. It contains more oil and slower drying than Medium #2. Ideal for painters who prefer a heavier and more viscous medium.
Medium #2 can be fattened by gradually adding Medium #3 in 10% increments.

Art Spectrum Oil Medium range is also available in #1 and #4 Liquol

Art Spectrum Oil Painting Medium #4, or Liquol medium is a glazing medium. Fast drying and versatile medium ideal for multiple glazes. Depending on climate and thickness of the paint, paint mixed with Medium #4 will dry within 24 hours. Paint wet on wet or leave to dry before overpainting.

Art Spectrum Oil Medium range is also available in #1, #2 and #3
