Painting Mediums & Varnishes

Matisse Acrylic Painting Binder is a low-sheen and transparent primer with good adhesion. Principally used as a a paint dilutant for canvas, paper or board.

Matisse Black Gesso is an intense black ground with excellent tooth, allowing for easy paint manipulation. Permanent and flexible, Matisse Black Gesso is water-based and a great primer for canvas, board and paper.

Matisse Clear Sealer is specifcally formulated for folk art techniques on raw wood, glass, ceramics, terracotta pots and new metals.

Mix your acrylic colours with Matisse Fabric Fixative to create permanent designs on fabrics and textiles. Mix equal parts of Matisse Fabric Fixative & acrylic paint, then heat-set with an iron to ensure your designs become wash-fast.

Matisse Gel Mediums are able to produce a wide range of effects when intermixed with other mediums and acrylic colours. Specifically formulated to be thick & buttery, whilst remaining full transparent, Matisse Gel Mediums are high versatile - able to act as a clear transparent colour extender and also as an impasto for 3D extrapolations & multi-layer work.

Matisse Impasto is a full-bodied texture paste and modelling compound, free of colour pigmentation. Although Matisse Impasto is not fully transparent when dry, there is very little visual colour-loss when mixing and the richness will not be altered in any substantial way.

Drying to a low, subdued sheen and with a very open matrix, Matisse Impasto has the major benefit of allowing all the water to evaporate while losing less volume on drying.

Matisse Iridescent Medium is based on pure iridescent pigment, containing no fillers or titanium dioxide. Mixable in any proportion, the artist is in control of the intensity and richness of the metallic sheen. Matisse Iridescent Medium looks great over a black background.

Matisse Low Viscosity Gesso is a softer, creamier alternative to the Matisse White Gesso range. While still posessing the bright white colour, soft tooth and flat finish, Matisse Low Viscosity Gesso is easier to brush out and manipulate.

Matisse Gel Mediums are able to produce a wide range of effects when intermixed with other mediums and acrylic colours. Specifically formulated to be thick & buttery, whilst remaining full transparent, Matisse Gel Mediums are high versatile - able to act as a clear transparent colour extender and also as an impasto for 3D extrapolations & multi-layer work.

Matisse Matt Medium will, when intermixed, reduce the sheen of acrylic colours to look more like tempera or gouache. Mostly beneficial when used in large areas of colour, Matisse Matt Mediums help to eliminate side sheen and the unfavourable appearance of accidental brush strokes.

Matisse Open Medium can be mixed with acrylic colours to prolong drying time, while still maintaining the paint's consistency. Best suited for outdoor painting, particularly in hot weather, Matisse Open Medium gives the paint a smooth & buttery handling with a glowing satin finish.

Matisse Polymer Water-Based Varnishes serve as a finishing varnish or are freely intermixable with acrylic colours and mediums to achieve varying degrees of water resistance and flow. Use over dried, well-cured acrylic paints.
