FAQs about Pastel Pencils

Pastel pencils are soft pastel encased in wood. They're great for adding minute detail to pastel works. They're also a better choice than using ordinary soft pastels because they're less messy.

There are many techniques to sharpen pastel pencils, a craft knife and sandpaper are both effective. You can run the pencil and twist it round with sand paper to create a very sharp point. If you use a conventional manual pencil sharpener, the lead will often fracture.

You may use a paper stump, a rubber shaper, or your finger to mix pastels. To enhance or increase a colour, combine several similar hues together, such as two or three blues or greens. Apply pure-color diagonal lines without blending to keep colours from becoming muddy (hatching and cross hatching).
