FAQs about Acrylic Paint Brushes

To clean brushes with dried acrylic paint, make sure your brush is made of natural fibres first rather than synthetic fibers, as synthetic fibres tend to break down when exposed to chemicals solvents.

Acetone is a solvent that is proven to work. The downside is that it has a strong chemical odour, and should not be used indoors or next to children. Isopropryl alcohol is another strong solvent. This is a good alternative to acetone as it is substantially more odourless while having similar strength.

Whichever solvent you choose, place your brush in a glass jar and add enough solvent so that the bristles and ferrule are fully submerged. Wait a couple of minutes, then wash the brush with soapy water. Dishwasher soap is preferred to hand soap, as it is stronger and can penetrate the brush further. Repeat the process if there is still dried paint left on the brush.

Need to clean your acrylic plain brushes? There a few easy steps you need to take to keep them in tip-top condition.

Step 1 - Clean the brush by wiping off any excess acrylic paint. To do this you can use a cloth or some paper towls to press down the brush to the britles to push paint out the tip of the brush. You may need to do this part a few times.

Step 2 - Using some clean water, swirl the brush to help release any stubborn acrylic paint on the bristles. Then with a cloth, you can work out any remaining bits of paint in the brush. Again, you might need to do this a few times to get it all out.

Step 3 - Finally, once you are done, keep your acrylic brushes stored away in a jar or a brush holder.

Acrylic Brushes: Tools to Elevate Your Painting

Acrylic painting is a bold, exciting medium that offers endless possibilities for artistic expression. But let’s be real—getting the results you’re after depends heavily on having the right tools. Your brushes are your closest allies in this process. Whether you’re just starting out or refining your techniques, the right acrylic brushes can make all the difference in bringing your vision to life. At Discount Art & Craft Warehouse, we’re all about helping artists find tools they can rely on. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about acrylic brushes—from what makes them special to how to care for them.

Why Acrylic Brushes Matter

Acrylic paints are fast-drying and vibrant, but their unique properties can be tough on regular brushes. That’s where acrylic brushes come in—they’re designed to work specifically with this medium, giving you consistent, reliable results.

Built for Acrylic Paints

What sets acrylic brushes apart is their ability to handle the demands of thick, quick-drying paint. They’re made with bristles that maintain their shape and stiffness no matter how intense your painting session gets.

Control and Durability

Let’s face it—there’s nothing worse than a brush that starts shedding or fraying halfway through your project. Acrylic brushes are built tough to stand up to heavy use, giving you consistent performance every time.

Pro Tip: When you’re working on detail-heavy pieces, short-handle brushes can give you the precision you need. For larger-scale work, long handles give you more freedom to move.

Exploring Acrylic Brush Types

Not all brushes are created equal. Each type is designed for specific techniques, so having a mix in your collection can really elevate your work.

Flat Brushes

Flat brushes are the multitaskers of the painting world. They’re great for creating sharp lines, filling large areas, and even layering paint for smooth blends.

Pro Tip: For crisp edges, use the flat side of the brush, and for fine lines, tilt it on its narrow edge. It’s like having two tools in one!

Round Brushes

Round brushes are the go-to for flexibility. Need fine lines? Done. Want bold, fluid strokes? No problem. These brushes are a favourite for their versatility.

Pro Tip: Practice varying your pressure as you paint—light strokes for delicate details, heavier strokes for bold designs. You’ll be amazed at what you can do with just one brush!

Taking Care of Your Brushes

Your brushes are an investment, and a little TLC goes a long way in keeping them in great shape. Here’s how to make them last.

Cleaning Made Simple

Cleaning brushes might not be the most exciting part of painting, but it’s crucial. Acrylic paint dries fast, and once it’s hardened, it can be a nightmare to remove.

  1. Rinse your brush under lukewarm water as soon as you’re done painting.
  2. Use a mild soap or a brush cleaner to work out any paint stuck in the bristles.
  3. Gently reshape the bristles and lay the brush flat to dry.

Pro Tip: Avoid standing brushes upright in water—this can loosen the glue that holds the bristles in place, and no one wants a bald brush!

Storage Tips

Storing your brushes correctly keeps them organised and protects them from damage.

  • Brush wallets, like the Jasart Brush Wallet Set, are great for keeping your tools tidy and safe.
  • Store brushes flat or upright with the bristles facing up to maintain their shape.

Pro Tip: Have a separate set of brushes for acrylics to avoid contamination from other mediums. It’s a small step that can make a big difference!

Making the Most of Your Brushes

The beauty of acrylic brushes is their versatility. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different techniques or combine brush types in a single piece. Whether you’re blending, layering, or creating bold textures, the right brush can help you bring your ideas to life.
